One more Vishu is coming .. Years are passing so fast..Kids are growing ,we r getting old and my recipe list is increasing 🙂 ….Thanks a lot my dear friends for ur love and support .. ..Love u all … Wish u all a happy ,fantastic ,peaceful and prosperous Vishu ..
So are u all set to celebrate vishu !! 🙂
Most of the time vishu comes on 14th or 15th of April ..This year its on 15th ..That means Tomorrow…. 🙂
I like Vishu more than Onam .Its coz of so many reasons ..so many childhood memories associated with Vishu … The one main thing is Off course Vishu Kani and kaineetam..
Vishukani means ‘The first thing that should be seen after waking up in the morning’. Without Vishukani, Vishu is incomplete. There is a belief that seeing an auspicious kani first thing in the morning brings a lot of luck for the entire year
The kani consists of ritual arrangement of auspicious items such as golden cucumber, betel leaves, raw rice (Unakkalari), lemon, valkannadi (a metal mirror with a long and thin handle), halved coconuts filled with oil and kept upright, ‘konna’, a kasavu pudava (a Kerala style Sarang which is white in color with golden border), golden mango, a holy book (Ramayana) and coins in a metal circular vessel called uruli. This uruli is usually kept in the puja (prayer) room of the house. A nilavilakku (coconut-oil fed lamp) is also kept beside the uruli. It is not necessary to keep all these items. One can keep whichever is available but the only basic element is that the items which are kept should be golden or yellow in color. A cloth is pleated and placed inside a brass ‘kindi’ (a puja vessel used to pour sacred water). The metal mirror is also kept inside the kindi. This kindi is also placed inside the uruli.. ..
As I am in dubai no pooja room and no konna poo..,so have to satisfy myself by arranging this kind of kani 🙂
Amma used to prepare kani in the night itself ,we r not allowed to go near to it 😉 she didn’t want us to loose the excitement of that kani….We had a kani Konna in front of our house ..In the month of march it began to blossom and really its a wonderful treat to our eyes .. So after Kani, achan and amma used to give us Vishu kai neetam..Now a days kids don’t know the value of this kind of festivals ..
So after Kani ,its time to make Vishu katta for breakfast .
Two important food items for Vishu are Vishu kata and ada. Vishu katta is made of coconut milk and rice.
In some places they prepare vishu kanji .. In my house amma make vishu kata along with Raw cashew nut curry and jaggery syrup ..I really miss my amma … 😦
Everyone wears new clothes called kodi for the occasion. Another important aspect of Vishu is the sadya (an elaborate feast). Since it is a season of mangoes, mambazha pulissseri is very common. Chakka pradhaman also will be there ..The feast usually consists of approximately equal proportions of sweet, salty, bitter and sour items.
When the adults are busy preparing sadya, kids r enjoying bursting crackers ..Its a festival of prosperity and peace …
So dear friends here I am trying to bring our authentic sadya feast ,do try to make Vishu sadya at home than ordering from outside ..Again Wish u all a happy Vishu 🙂
